Situated at 77km from Puerto Piramides, Caleta is one of the geographic features on Península Valdes that gathers a large variety of coastal fauna. The inlet, a lagoon formed by a spit of pebble, dirt and sand that lies from north to south, lets the sea water flow in and out through a small mouth. This special ecosystem shelters large groups of sea mammals and sea and coastal birds that mix with some typical species from the Patagonian steppe. Its beaches, protected from the sea and the winds, are the perfect scenario for the elephant seal. The massive adult males reach these coasts at the beginning of August to fight for a portion of the beach, territory that will eventually attract the females that will form their harems. In this way, the inlet has become an exceptional habitat that will also attract the orcas that frequently patrol the area in search for food. Large groups of Magellanic penguins can be observed as well. The various miradores, strategically placed on the cliff, let you watch these fantastic spectacles of the animal world.
